Your summer job search
Happy summer!
With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror, it’s officially summer. Days are longer and everything slows down to a crawl, including the hiring process. In our post-pandemic world, more organizations are remote which means that an organization’s employees may live in several different states and time zones. This can make scheduling interviews a bit challenging. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, we add regional calendar differences and vacations to that equation. Therefore, scheduling interviews can become even more difficult. For example, schools in the south are out; I have family members who are going on vacation now. In the northeast, we tend to go on vacation in August.
Even though this time is full of out of office messages and multiple emails to nail down the exact date of an interview, this is still a great time to be looking. However, make sure that you keep your scheduled vacations and take the time you need to recharge as well. Here are a few considerations:
#1) The process will probably take longer than usual.
Typically, a search takes 12 weeks. During the summer months, that often will extend to 16 weeks. Organizations will not hold interviews during certain weeks (like the week of July 4). Also, when staff go on vacations at different times and candidates also have vacations scheduled, it can be challenging to nail down a date. The whole process is likely to feel slower. Know that going into it so that you don’t stress about it.
#2) Enjoy the summer and be strategic about your job search by looking in the right places.
I am getting a lot of calls about opportunities right now. For many organizations, the second quarter budget came through and they got the green light on the positions they’ve been asking for. I recently shared information on our blog about the best places to look for a job. In that post, I included informative groups like Rad Comms and listservs like Sujata Strategies. Keep your job search going but don’t exhaust yourself. Work smarter.
#3) Work smarter by contacting and building your network.
Don’t just apply for jobs, set a goal for the number of meetings you’ll have between now and July 4 to reconnect with members of your network you haven’t talked to in a while and also to add people to your network. I will be your accountability partner! Fill out this form and I’ll email you in late June to see if you are on track to meet your goal.
