5 tips to land your dream job and Happy Groundhog Day! 🦫

I meet with a lot of people looking for new opportunities and most want to land their dream job. Yet the job search can feel like Groundhog Day –you are looking for a shadow, a signal, anything (!), that gives you some direction on what’s going to happen next. That’s why an outside perspective can be helpful.

While Groundhog Day is one of my favorite holidays, it’s not that helpful of an example for your job search. First off, please know that most likely landing your dream job will require some work. Here are some tips that will keep you grounded in the beginning of your search.

  1. Build a list of organizations that you love. Then set a google news alert for each of them. You can use this to stay informed and use this knowledge when you apply for a position down the road.

  2. Be intentional about reaching out on LinkedIn and pay attention who is connected to your network. Use this information to request introductions and to find out more about the culture of the organization.

  3. Work your connections. Are there connections you aren’t taking advantage of? Don’t forget to connect with alumni from the institution or institutions you attended. Reaching out to strangers or people you know only a little is a lot easier if you have a common interest.

  4. Ask for virtual coffees and keep reaching out. If someone ignores you, follow-up 4-8 weeks later. When asking for a meeting, be honest about why you are reaching out. Perhaps you want to know more about the culture of an organization or hear the person’s story about how they landed their dream job.

  5. Follow the money. Who is funding the organizations you are interested in? By following the resources coming in, you can get a good idea about who might be hiring soon.

Also, we have another free webinar coming up that will be hosted by my colleague, Arianna Haut, who leads our hiring in education. These webinars are geared toward school leaders and teachers. I hope you can attend!
