The feedback you’ve been asking for

After every interview, candidates always ask for specific feedback. We never give it because my pricey attorney tells me not to. Yet, I still want to help. Here’s my attempt to set you up for success.

Let’s focus on tips to help you stand out. Remember, your application materials serve a purpose: to tell your story. Before you hit submit, take a look at the story told by the combination of your answers to application questions, resume, and LinkedIn profile.

Three questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do my application materials tell a coherent story? I’ve seen candidates who forget about their LinkedIn profile and when compared with their resume, the profile looks like it belongs to a different person. Make sure that you review your LinkedIn profile and craft a story that highlights your achievements in the areas that are most relevant to the position you are applying for.

  2. Why do I want this job at this organization right now? Not only will your answer to this question help you in the phone interview, but it will help you answer the application questions in a thoughtful way. Check out my other tips for application questions

  3. What are the key components of the job description and what relevant experiences can I offer to this organization? It’s great to ask this question before you write your application question answers but it’s essential to ask this before heading into a phone interview. Read the job description thoroughly and think about the story the organization is telling. For recruiters, it’s clear who has done their homework and who hasn’t. If you ask this question right away, then you'll be ready for the phone interview
