Special offer: One-way video interview tips/training

Have you come across a request to perform a one-way interview as part of your job search? Most candidates have yet to encounter this, but we’re seeing employers increasingly building them into the hiring process. Essentially, you are prompted to answer between two and five interview questions on camera, and submit your responses for the hiring team to review.

I’ll be frank: Some candidates don’t mind them, some hate them, and almost all find them awkward and impersonal. Employers and recruiters find them really helpful, though. So, since it seems the one-way video interview is here to stay, we’re here to help you be your absolute best.

First, for all of our newsletter subscribers, we’re extending a special offer! We invite you to try out a one-way video here. It’s just two straight-forward questions to give you first-hand experience with how these work before you one day have to do it for real. We’ll send it back to you so you can see how you did, and provide a couple brief feedback notes. We’ve set it up so you have unlimited time to think about your answer, and unlimited retakes. Give it a shot!

Second, here are some tips for excelling at the one-way video interview:

  • Dress as you would for an in-person or Zoom interview.

  • Make sure your lighting is good. (It doesn’t have to be professional – just make sure you’re not sitting in a shadow.)

  • Be yourself! This is tricky given that you’re speaking into a void, but do your best to be comfortable and conversational.

  • Do your homework on the organization and the role. Often, the questions will be easy to answer in very generic terms, but the candidates who stand out will tailor their answers to the employer and the job description.

Feel free to reach out to one of our coaches if you’d like to do a deeper dive on one-way interviews or telling your personal story in compelling ways!
