Tips: Re-launching your job search in the New Year
I can't believe this is my first time emailing this list all year 😆.
I hope you had a great break and were able to slow down and recharge.
For many, the start of a New Year is a good time to get serious about the job hunt. I’ve talked about these themes before, but I’ve got three simple tips for re-launching your search that I think are wicked important.
Consider giving yourself the gift of a career coach. If you've been on the hunt for a while, it's easy to get discouraged and it often feels lonely. One way to fix this is by talking to someone and getting advice on how to make sure you are presenting yourself well. I've teamed up with Sarah Marini Lessin, who I met on the Obama campaign. She's run talent searches for multiple organizations and has oodles of advice. Treat yourself to some support! (As one happy client said about Sarah, “I feel empowered to continue the hunt armed with awesome materials and a clear framework for triaging opportunities.”)
Make sure you are looking for jobs in the right places. There isn’t a one-stop shop for remote jobs, and not every organization posts to the same sites. So, it's important that you stay diligent about looking. Typically, you want to spend 20 minutes a day combing through job boards and looking at new roles that have just come online. My gut is that in January we’ll see a bunch of new opportunities. As for me, I'm getting ready to launch 10 new searches! I've shared where I post jobs in the past, so make sure you are checking these sites. I’m also all ears for the job boards, listservs, and Slack channels you use. One of my 2022 goals is to expand the list of places I'm posting.
Remember that it's all about your network. Rather than focusing on applying for jobs, focus on building your network. Set a goal for how many people you want to talk to by Valentine's Day and hold yourself to it. Feel free to share the number with me and I can help hold you accountable!
Here are the top three jobs we’re featuring this week:
Senior Campaign Organizer at The New Movement to Redress Racial Segregation; $65,000-$75,000; Charlotte, N.C., Denver, Milwaukee.
Deputy Director of Organizational Strengthening at TCC Group; $175,000-$230,000; Remote (Northeast/Mid-Atlantic).
Western RTO Campaign Director at the Energy Foundation; $16,000/month; Remote (Western States).
Now, onto housekeeping!
NRG Consulting is offering coaching programs to folks on the job hunt, whether you’re an entry- or senior-level candidate. Check out the programs we’re offering on our website, and get in touch with us. I'm also considering launching a coaching program specifically geared toward teachers looking to make a transition to a new school, into school leadership, or out of schools altogether. If you'd be interested in something like this, I'd love to chat with you.
If you find this newsletter helpful, forward it to your friends and help us build our network! Also, if you have feedback or an idea for a future newsletter topic, shoot me a note.
Finally, I'm in the process of getting all the NRG jobs online, but the best way to make sure you know what roles we are hiring for is to follow me on LinkedIn and to sign-up for our talent network.
