What recruiters look for on your LinkedIn profile

When I’m recruiting for a job and first get introduced to a candidate, I always take a quick peek at their LinkedIn. In other words, it’s important that your profile is high quality and lets me know quickly what you’re all about.

As a professional recruiter, here are some things that I look for and relatively simple things that you should do on LinkedIn:

  1. Your LinkedIn should read like your resume. Don't just list out where you work; list out what you accomplished. For example, on my profile, instead of just saying I was a consultant for a high-performing charter school in Boston, I said I was a “One-person talent operation that worked to fill 60 staff positions for the 2018-2019 school year.” I did this so people understood why it was a one year gig and the magnitude of the job.

  2. Get to at least 500 connections. LinkedIn makes it easy to upload your network. Click on “expand your network” and type in every email address you've ever had and grant LinkedIn access. The more connected you are, the stronger candidate you are.

  3. If you’re job searching, consider paying for LinkedIn Premium ($79.99/month). It allows you to see who’s looking at your profile (it always made me happy to know that people are checking me out), and it gives you 20 “in-messages” (meaning you can email 20 strangers a month). This is helpful when you want to ask questions about a role or organization you’re interested in.

  4. Consider writing an “About Me” header. This helps introduce what you are best at and what you are currently looking for. I always read them when I see them.
