MY TOP JOB SEARCHING TIPS

Whether you’re just entering the workforce, lost your job because of the pandemic, or simply looking for a career change, the job search can be daunting. Not to mention, there’s a lot of advice out there (some of it helpful, some not) about how to approach it.

So, we want to share some simple, tried-and-true advice to keep you better focused and help you get more out of the search. Here are some top tips from an experienced recruiter:

  1. Don’t (only) apply for jobs; leverage your network. It can be tempting to set goals around the number of applications you submit. Instead, you should put more of your energy into having conversations with people in the field you’re interested in. This not only sets you up for your current job search, but for future searches.

  2. Aim to have eight conversations a week. Approach these conversations as opportunities to expand your network, and try to get three new names from each. Ask the question: “Who else do you know who I should be talking to?”

  3. Send thank you notes to everyone. Pretty self-explanatory -- it’s polite, but it also builds the relationship and makes them more likely to think of you when they see openings.

  4. Choose an accountability person you can report progress to. Tell them what you’re going to do and by when, and then check in regularly. This will help keep you on top of things.

Here are the top three jobs we’re featuring this week:

  1. Senior Development Manager at Toxics Free Future; $65,000-$72,000; Seattle, Wash. preferred, open to other locations in Pacific Northwest.

  2. Marketing Manager at Ed Navigator; $60,000; Remote.

  3. Manager of Research and Analytics at The Possible Project; Boston, Mass.
